Summer on the Sunshine Coast (December through February) belongs to the beach and the water. Surf Life Saving Queensland carnivals draw competitors from clubs all along the coast, with Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland and Maroochydore among the active venues. Ocean swim events kick off the new year, including the beloved Mooloolaba Mile, while junior cricket seasons are in full swing at grounds across Caloundra and the hinterland. Triathlon season opens with the Mooloolaba Triathlon typically held in March, drawing thousands of athletes to the foreshore.
Autumn (March through May) is arguably the Sunshine Coast's busiest sporting stretch. The Noosa Triathlon, one of the largest multisport festivals in the world, anchors the calendar each year in late October, but the lead-up season sees triathletes training hard at Noosa, Mooloolaba and Kawana. The Queensland Cup rugby league season is well underway, with Sunshine Coast Falcons home games at Kawana drawing strong crowds. The Sunshine Coast Marathon and associated running events draw thousands of participants to the foreshore.
Winter (June through August) is Queensland Cup finals time and a highlight for Falcons supporters. Grassroots winter sports including touch football and soccer are in full competition mode, with fields across Maroochydore, Caloundra and Noosa busy every weekend. Athletics carnivals through Little Athletics Queensland keep young track and field athletes competing. The cooler temperatures make the Glass House Mountains trails popular with mountain bikers and trail runners.
Spring (September through November) brings the region's most celebrated sporting moments. The Noosa Triathlon in late October is the centrepiece, transforming Noosa Heads into a festival of multisport for an entire week. The Noosa Festival of Surfing runs each March and draws world-class longboarders and shortboarders to the famous Noosa point breaks, making it a must for surf fans. Parkrun events at locations across the Sunshine Coast continue every Saturday morning year-round, rain or shine.
No matter what month you arrive on the Sunshine Coast, there is almost certainly a sporting event worth attending or entering. Checking the Sunshine Coast Council events calendar and the websites of individual clubs and governing bodies is the best way to stay across what is on near you.
